3 Ways God speaks to us creatively

God loves to speak to us. He loves to whisper love notes and correction to our hearts. For many Christian women, God talks to us through creativity.

But perhaps you don’t believe that you’ve heard from God in a creative way. Well, as a bossy McBoss pants, I’m here to tell you that you’re probably wrong. 😉 Most of us have heard from Him in some creative capacity but maybe didn’t recognize it as so!

Let’s talk about some ways God speaks to us creatively!

1. Pictures in our minds

Many women doubt that God speaks to them through pictures in their minds. I’m here to tell you that’s simply not true! Let’s jump over to Proverbs 3 and start reading at verse 13 in the English Standard Version…and I double dog dare you to NOT picture anything in your mind:

“Blessed is the one who finds wisdom, and the one who gets understanding, for the gain from her is better than gain from silver and her profit better than gold. She is more precious than jewels, and nothing you desire can compare with her. Long life is in her right hand; in her left hand are riches and honor. Her ways are ways of pleasantness,  and all her paths are peace.”

Shall I continue or is keeping your mind blank too hard? Don’t think of shiny silvers and golds and glittering diamonds. Ahem, verse 18:

“She is a tree of life to those who lay hold of her; those who hold her fast are called blessed.”

Did a tree pop into your mind there? A big oak tree popped into mine! Now, it doesn’t necessarily matter what sort of tree you saw, it was that you SAW one and it wasn’t with your eyeballs.

This is God speaking to us in a creative, visual way. He uses descriptive language like this in His Word to evoke our imaginations and help us draw parallels from His Word into our personal lives. Isn’t that so cool!?

2. Journaling

As a woman, sometimes I feel #allthethings at once. Can I get an amen? One habit that really helps me to hear God speak when I’m discombobulated is to journal what I’m feeling, then write how God’s Word says to handle it.

God’s voice becomes so clear to me when I read Philippians 4:4-9; this passage helps me to realign my emotions with Biblical truths. If I feel like I need to get a grip because my world is spinning, I’ll begin to journal why I feel this way and then follow it up with this Scripture.

When I write these verses from Philippians, God immediately speaks to me by asking, “How will your response change to this situation in light of My Word?”

He asks such a great, open-ended question here! It is one that can empower us to change the situation at hand with insight from His Word and through His whisper to our hearts.

Next time you face a difficult situation, open your Bible to Philippians 4:4-9 and give this creative process a try. I bet God’s voice will shine through Scripture and bring peace and understanding to your situation.

3. Worship songs

Have you ever shed a tear during a worship song? God knows I’ve fallen to my knees blubbering a time or two. If you have, you know that you’ve received a special visit from the presence of God where He communicates to you through what someone else has written.

God has this magical way of ministering to us where He delivers a package of love through the lyrics of a worship song. There is something about the melody and the lyrics that resonates within us and when combined with God’s presence, we experience a little bit of heaven.

It is a moment where He meets our needs with a transformative encounter that is too dear for words. That’s Him speaking to us through the creativity of music and it is something I can’t wait to experience more of in heaven.

Now, looking back on your walk of faith, do you see how you may have heard God speak to you creatively? And these are just a few of the outlets God can use to speak to us.
